Dental Hygienist

What is it?

Regular visits to your dental surgery's hygienist is vital for maintaining the long-term health of your gums and teeth.

The procedure

Teeth will be scaled (cleaned) and polished to remove hard deposits of tartar and any superficial staining. Allow 30 minutes.

Cost

From £30.

What can go wrong?

Apart from some slight sensitivity and bleeding of gums, nothing. A visit to a dental hygienist is recommended every six to 12 months.

Braces

What is it?

Forget ugly 'railway track' braces, it's now possible to realign teeth with a new generation of braces.

The procedure

You wear a series of aligners for two weeks at a time until the final position is achieved (can take up to 15 months).

Cost

From £1,100 upwards - prices vary a lot.

What can go wrong?

Speech may be affected temporarily. At the end of treatment, if a retainer isn't fixed, teeth could move back to their original position.

Gum Reshaping

What is it?

Gum levels can be uneven and give a gummy smile. Gently contouring the gum tissue can make the smile look more even.

The procedure

Using a local anaesthetic, the gum is reshaped by an electocautery probe or a laser. This procedure takes up to 40 minutes to do.

Cost

From around £60 per tooth

What can go wrong?

Gums may look a bit bloody for a couple of days. If using a laser, the dentist needs to hold a special licence from the Healthcare Commission.
